Working to confirm the first Black woman to the Supreme Court
Working to help get the first Black woman confirmed to the Supreme Court will definitely be one of the highlights of my career.
In 2022, President Biden nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. Working with People For the American Way and a coalition of organizations fighting for fair courts, we worked on a public-facing campaign to make sure she was confirmed to the Court.
From educating the public about her illustrious record to organizing the celebration of her confirmation at the Court, we were in the fight the whole way. I worked to create social media graphics, motion graphics, signs, t-shirts, and videos to support her nomination.
I had to opportunity to lead digital rapid response efforts for People For and for the coalition of organizations I was working with and organize events with dozens of national organizations, including She Will Rise, National Women's Law Center, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and more. We worked together to equip new activists with the tools they needed to join the fight to confirm Justice Jackson with our Justice For All toolkit and training.
One of the highlights of the campaign for me was getting to create a series of videos that centered the voices of Black women and highlighted what this moment meant to them. Getting to speak with and hear the stories of Black women and girls from across a spectrum of ages and locations was so incredibly powerful - and added a new layer of joy and intensity to the work that I couldn't have imagined.
And it all culminated in a celebration I was honored to help organize outside the Supreme Court. Seeing little girls in black judges robes dancing on the steps of the Court cut such a stark contrast to the pain and fear I had seen on the faces of young women just years before during the Kavanaugh confirmation campaign.
This was truly an experience I will never forget. Thank you to everyone who worked on her campaign - and for allowing me to be a part of it.
